Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces.The number of people with diabetes rose from 108 million in 1980 to 422 million in 2014. This disease is more prevalent in low- and middle-income countries. Diabetes is a major cause of blindness, kidney failure, heart attacks, stroke and lower limb amputation.Between 2000 and 2019, there was a 3% increase in diabetes mortality rates by age.In 2019, diabetes and kidney disease due to diabetes caused an estimated 2 million deaths.
A healthy diet, regular physical activity, maintaining a normal body weight and avoiding tobacco use can help prevent or delay the onset of type II diabetes.
However if type II diabetes is acquired, it can be treated and its consequences can be avoided or delayed with diet, physical activity, medication, regular screening and getting treatment for complications.
Home Economics Department of Govt. Queen Mary Graduate College Lahore, arranged a Diabetes Awareness Camp in college hall. The event was an opportunity for college staff and students to learn about Diabetes, its risk factors, causes and management.

The camp offered, screening which included Body Mass Index(BMI) Assessment, Blood Glucose Assessment , Diabetic Education Visual Display indicating foods to consume and foods to avoid in diabetes and Dietary Consultation by qualified nutritionists.
Nutrition Care Professionals from Home Economics department guided the staff about importance of balanced diet, physical activity and controlled portion sizes.Diabetic patients were given special attention and guidelines.
