On 20th August 2024, Govt. Queen Mary Graduate College Lahore hosted a seminar dedicated to the digital empowerment of women through education, technology, and coding. The event emphasized the critical importance of equipping young women and girls with the skills needed to excel in the digital age.
The seminar commenced with a warm reception led by Principal Prof. Dr. Sidra Aamir, who welcomed the distinguished guests, including Ms. Hina Pervaiz Butt MPA and Chairperson of the Punjab Women Protection Authority; Lady MariĆ©me Jamme Founder and CEO of ‘iamtheCODE’; Mr. Zulfiqar Badar Advocate; and Mr. Gul Hassan Abbas Board Member of the Punjab Women Protection Authority. The guests were greeted with flowers, setting a gracious tone for the event, which opened with a recitation from the Holy Quran, followed by a Naat. Ms. Huma Usman, Associate Professor of English, extended a warm welcome to all attendees on behalf of the staff. The seminar’s focal point was a discussion on initiatives like iamtheCODE, which aims to empower one million young women and girls to become coders by 2030. Lady MariĆ©me Jamme captivated the audience with her insights on coding and her groundbreaking platform dedicated to teaching coding to young women and girls in challenging environments, including refugee camps and slums. Ms. Hina Pervaiz Butt underscored the importance of such initiatives in Pakistan, particularly in bridging the digital gender gap and creating opportunities for marginalized communities. Prof. Dr. Sidra Aamir expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the guests and addressed the students, highlighting the vital role of empowering young women to support their families. She also praised the Chief Minister of Punjab, Madam Maryam Nawaz, as an inspiring role model for women’s empowerment. The seminar concluded with the presentation of college souvenirs to the guests as tokens of appreciation. The event closed with a renewed commitment to supporting initiatives like ‘iamtheCODE’ within Punjab, recognizing their potential to advance womenās empowerment and drive economic growth.
